If you have ever enjoyed the comfort of sweet Mexican bread or the joy of a beautifully made cake, you already understand the heart behind Pick Me Up Cafe. The business is owned by Hortencia Gonzalez, who has spent the last five years building her bakery with determination, creativity, and a deep love for her craft.
Hortencia began selling traditional Mexican pastries and cakes with early support from Cinthya Montero, who helped her launch her business before joining the CIE team. The beginning was difficult. Resources were limited, the work was demanding, and every step forward required persistence. Hortencia kept going. She continued baking, serving customers, and slowly growing a loyal community around her food.
Recently, Cinthya reached out to check in, and Hortencia shared that she felt ready to expand. She explained that her business could grow significantly if she had a commercial refrigerator. With more storage, she could produce larger quantities, keep more items on hand, and increase her sales.
Cinthya introduced her to CIE’s Blended Capital Program and helped her complete a business plan to secure grant funding for the equipment she needed. With that support, Hortencia purchased her commercial refrigerator and opened the door to new growth.
“Now I can sell more,” Hortencia says with pride.
Her story reflects the way CIE works. We listen closely, offer patient guidance, and move at the speed of trust. When entrepreneurs like Hortencia receive the tools and support they need, their businesses do more than survive. They thrive.
